Career Gear is a non-profit organization founded in New York City in 1998. Our mission is to help low-income men find and keep jobs that will support them and their families, increase their self-esteem, and lead to a more just and equitable community. We help jobless men by providing the following: 1) career counseling and interview preparation; 2) clean, interview-appropriate clothing; 3) job retention and advancement skills training; and 4) support services and referrals. Partnering with job-training programs, Career Gear works with men who have graduated from these programs and are scheduled for job interviews. Career Gear has helped over 3,000 men obtain employment. Our clients are 18 to 55 year-old men who are terminated or laid off workers, recent immigrants, recovering substance abusers, disabled, homeless, ex-offenders, public assistance recipients, and veterans. They are predominantly African-American and Latino with a high school or GED-level education. |
