- Ever since Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty broke attendance records at the Met in 2011, the summer tourist season has become the choice time for museums to break out the fashion exhibits. And this year, the list of potential blockbusters is over-whelming and if I had my way, I'd spend the next few months continent-hopping to catch them all. At least a few of these are just a train ride away. Mary Quant Victoria & Albert, London, UK Through February 16, 2020 The Dior exhibit may have sold out, but there are still some fashion-friendly reasons to visit the V&A, most notably the Mary Quant show that opened last month. Quant was at the forefront of the 60s British youth quake, her cheerful, modernist designs (and short hemlines with go-go boots) influenced the way an entire generation of young women dressed. Check out over Mary Quant 200 garments, accessories and objects, including pieces from her adorably packaged (and now much coveted) make-up line of the 1960s and 70s. Dior: From Paris to the World Dallas Museum of Art, Dallas, TX May 19 - September 1, 2019 And speaking of Dior, we'll always have Texas! The Dallas Museum of Art has its own retrospective (which debuted in Denver earlier this year). Explore the House of Dior through 40 years worth of original garments, sketches, photos, and videos that spotlight not only Christian Dior, but all of the designers who've helmed the legendary label, including Yves Saint Laurent, Gianfranco Ferré and Maria Grazia Chiurri. Camp: Notes on Fashion Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC May 9 - September 8, 2019 There's been a lot of debate about whether the Met's 'Camp' exhibit is actually campy; there are both positive and negative reviews floating about the internet. I can see both viewpoints, but I will reserve total judgement until I see the show for myself. With that said, any time a mainstream institution tries to explore an underground movement, thoughtfulness and authenticity can be lacking. (Remember the Met's widely mocked PUNK: Chaos to Couture ?) At the very least, you'll get to see lots of outrageous (and outrageously expensive) designer get-ups festooned with feathers, sequins and glitter. Thierry Mugler: Couturissime Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, Quebec Through - September 8, 2019 Interestingly, the most campy exhibit of the year may not be in NYC but in Montreal. Thierry Mugler has designed some of the most otherworldly looks in modern pop culture, like the body armor Gaga wore in 'Paparazzi' and biker bustier sported by Beyonce (both outfits actually made their public debut in George Michael's 1992 'Too Funky' video, which Mugler costumed). 'Couturissime' is the first museum show ever to celebrate Mugler's career, which spanned the worlds of fashion, theater and photography. Minimalism/Maximalism The Museum at FIT May 28 - November 16, 2019 The Met may have a higher profile, but my favorite spot in New York for fashion exhibits is the Museum at FIT. Not only is it free, but the programs are always perfectly edited and presented, I always feel just a little bit smarter when I leave. Their upcoming show, 'Minimalism/ Maximalism' presents both sides of the fashion spectrum (spanning from the 18th century through today) and how they relate to world events and the culture at large, like the Depression, WWII, the space race, and 80s opulence.
